What is hypoxia?

A condition in which tissues receive insufficient oxygen.

Hypoxia is a condition in which tissues receive insufficient oxygen. It happens when oxygen delivery to cells falls short of what they need for metabolism, which can occur from low arterial oxygen (hypoxemia), poor circulation, or problems with hemoglobin’s ability to carry oxygen, among other causes. When tissues are starved of oxygen, cells can’t produce energy efficiently, leading to impaired function and symptoms like headache, confusion, shortness of breath, or cyanosis in some cases. This is not about having high oxygen in the blood, or about high carbon dioxide, or merely about a rapid breathing rate; those describe different situations.

A high oxygen level in the blood.

A condition involving high carbon dioxide in the blood.

A rapid breathing rate.
